Fort Delaware located on Pea Patch Island was part of a system of Forts for harbor defense. The fort also served as a Civil War prison camp. Most of the Confederates, housed here in wooden barracks, were captured at Gettysburg. Conditions at the end of the war are described as "notorious".
These days the fort hosts an "Escape from Fort Delaware" triathlon each June to follow in the footsteps of 52 escapees. It's generally believed only one escapee survived.
Access to Fort Delaware is via ferry and departures are from Fort Mott, NJ and Delaware City, DE. A tram will shuttle you from the dock to the fort and back.
The coordinates will take you to the cannon below. The GPS didn't behave well within the walls of the fort but looking at the Google map just keep walking straight down the path.
To clarify because of a suggestion, the cannon is large and under cover of the fort. It not one of the portable cannons.
Please click the "Forts" link above then check the ferry schedule.
The fort is open weekends and holidays from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend. It is also open Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from June 16 through September 6.

View from the ferry

The CC is the 2 digit number in white stencil on the rear of the cannon.
You MUST also post a picture of the cannon with yourself and/or your GPS while being careful NOT to reveal the stenciled number.
