Located just north of Jupiter, Jonathan Dickinson State Park teems with wildlife in 13 natural communities, including sand pine scrub, pine flatwoods, mangroves, and river swamps. The Loxahatchee River, Florida's first federally designated Wild and Scenic River, runs through the park. Ranger-guided tours of the 1930s pioneer homestead of Trapper Nelson are available year-round. Visitors can enjoy paved and off-road biking, equestrian, and hiking trails. Boating, canoeing, and kayaking along the river are also great ways to see the park. Anglers can fish along the riverbank or from a boat. The nature and history of the park comes to life through exhibits and displays in the Elsa Kimbell Environmental Education and Research Center. Programs for the kids, or for the whole family, are also offered here.
Coffee-colored Kitching Creek meanders through a subtropical swamp. Bald cypress, pond apple, orchid, and fern line the bank. Heron and osprey fly overhead. Wildlife to watch include otter, raccoon, alligator, bobcat and turtles basking in the sun.
The cache is a decon container and it’s intended to be accessed by canoe or kayak. The trip from the boat launch inside JDSP up the Loxahatchee River and through Kitching Creek is one of the most scenic journey’s in all of Florida. At the landing spot you’ll need to climb the creek bank and walk about 50 feet to the cache. The trip from the boat launch to the cache and back is about 4 miles. Water levels on both the Loxahatchee River and Kitching Creek vary drastically depending on rainfall. Also, you’ll want to check the tide schedule for the river so plan accordingly. For information regarding river conditions, contact the Johathan Dickinson State Park staff by telephone.
The cache can also be accessed by hiking from inside JDSP along parts of the scenic Florida Trail. You’ll pass a scenic foot bridge crossing and a primitive campsite on the way to the cache. The hike is about 8 miles round trip from the parking area near the below listed trailhead. Bikes are NOT permitted on the Florida Trail.
