Clamshell Peak!

There are a number of ways to reach this peak. Here's a map to get you started:
The listed distance and elevation gain is from the shortest hike possible, but you will need an off-road capable vehicle to get to that trail-head (yellow route). Other options involve 10+ mile hikes and 3-4000 ft. elevation gains (red routes), and a good Mountain bike route (green). I took the yellow route, so I'll leave those others for you to research.
To drive the Rincon Shortcut from SR39
(N34 14.268 W117 51.808) to the trailhead at Spring Camp
(N34 13.020 W117 58.719) you'll need to get a free permit and the combination to the gate lock. Don't worry, it's easy. Permits are good for 2 weeks and are available at:
The drive is great fun for offroaders, with beautiful views, lots of switchbacks and a few obstacles to overcome. It's quite rough in some spots, with lots of rocks, so watch out for the sharp ones. Driving/Riding distance between the gate and the trailhead is 12.5 miles

After the hike, you can continue another 12.6 miles to the other end at Rt 2 if you want. But be advised that the east half of the route is rougher and tuffer! My average speeds were around 5 mph for this, so count on a long day. It will reward you with even more beautiful views, even lusher foliage and a beautiful stream crossing of the west fork of the San Gabriel river.

From the Spring Camp trail head, it's a beautiful 2.7 mile hike to the cache. You'll leave the dirt road at
(N34 12.098 W117 59.731) for a short steep climb to the saddle between the north and south peaks. At the saddle, clamshell peak is an easy jaunt to your right. The cache, and some amazing views all the way to the ocean (on a clear day) are an easy jaunt to your left. Even on the foggy day that I was there, I could see downtown LA from here! There is room to pitch a tent or two if you want.

The cache is a good sized Ammo Can stuffed with a bunch of cool goodies.

KNOWN HAZARDS: Just the usual mountain hazards -- Snakes and insects and pointy plants and stuff. If you are taking the OHV route, watch out for lots of sharp tire-punching rocks!
